Mazabuka hospital is a small government hospital with 160 beds and 5 wards;

  • Combined male and female medical and surgical
  • Labour/maternity
  • Paediatric and isolation
  • Physiotherapy

There are Clinics for ARV, antenatal, mother and child, general outpatients and domestic and sexual abuse.

There are 3 doctors, 1 medical licentiate, 7 clinicla officers, 70 nurses, 25 midwives, 2 physiotherapists, 1 nutritionist, 3 pharmacy staff, laboratory and administrative staff.

The hospital palliative care team has grown from nothing in 2012 to an enthusiastic team led by the physiotherapist and including 3 nurses, the head pharmacist, the Home Based Care (HBC) coordinator and HBC sister, 3 staff from the ART clinic, the pastor and sister.  The Hospital Director has also been trained in Palliative Care and, although extremely busy, is very supportive.


Palliative Care Team Objectives;

  • Develop Palliative Care in the hospital and in the community ensuring everybody knows about it
  • Provide excellent palliative care to patients in hospital and in the community
  • Develop a strong referral system
  • Improve data collection around morphine consumption
  • Train people in the District Health Clinics and HBC team
