Gulu Regional Referral Hospital

The hospital serves a wide catchment area in the Acholi sub-region of northern Uganda which includes seven districts.

The hospital’s palliative care team is made up of 2 specialist nurses, I clinical officer and I social worker.  All staff currently have full time jobs outside their palliative care commitments.

The hospital faces challenges in terms of the high number of patients and the pressure on trained staff.  There is a need for radiotherapy facilities and more extensive palliative chemotherapy.

Some Palliative Care objectives of the hospital are:

  • To alleviate pain and suffering of both in patients and out patients.
  • To equip and train hospital staff in palliative care.
  • To establish clear baselines for the care teams to work from.
